Job Purpose
To recruit transgender through communities as well as identify transgender who have defaulted (especially TB and / or HIV positive patients) in order to increase their access to clinical services (treatment of STI’s, HCT, Family planning, and so on) offered by Wits RHI.
Key performance areas
- Conduct pre and / or post HIV test counselling.
- Provide adherence counselling and support to clients eligible for, or already on ARV programme.
- Follow up with clients have defaulted by not attending the clinic for their follow up treatment, CD4 count results or monitoring at six months.
- Ensure that the hotels are timeously informed of mobile clinic day visits.
- Promote studies and recruit participants by conducting health talks and distributing brochures at the Clinics.
- Obtain verbal consent before conducting screening interviews.
- Inform willing participants that participation in the study is voluntary.
- Conduct screening interviews to consenting participant to determine eligibility into study.
- Schedule appointment with eligible participants to attend further screening at WRHI clinic.
- Record screened participants in screening register.
- Obtain informed consent from participants for screening and enrolment.
- Administer study questionnaires.
- Receive queries from patients and address or refer queries accordingly.
- Provide adherence counselling and support to clients eligible for, or already on PrEP programme.
- Provide health talks at the clinics and hotels and ensure that the prevention, VCT, adherence counselling is
- promoted to the clients.
- Communicate positive messages which focus on STI, SRH, TB and HIV and reflect integration of these messages.
- Demonstrate condom usage to clients as well as distribute to the outreach sites.
- Capturing results in patient files as well as documenting it in the required book.
- Ensure patient files are filed accurately.
- Preparing files for outreach.
- Ensure accurate and correct labelling of all specimen samples.
- Ensuring correct administration of Peer Educator timesheets and leave forms.
- Drive the team to different transgender hot spots for outreach.
- Drop off condoms at transgender hot spots.
- Communicate to brothel managers and transgender timeously outreach plans.
- Carry out necessary vehicle checks before trips.
- Operate vehicle with care and consideration to other road users.
- Report any vehicle faults, repairs, or accident timely.
- Complete relevant vehicle usage forms in accordance with policy.
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management.
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
- Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development
- activities.
Required minimum education and training.
- Grade 12.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Fluent in English and other African languages.
- Required minimum work experience.
- Minimum 6 months working experience as a Peer Educator working in communities.
- Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Basic HIV education and counseling.
- Empathetic with good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality.
- Able to work independently and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
